How to Write Better AI Prompts for App Generation

Practical tips for writing prompts that produce better apps, websites, and games from AI builders.

The quality of what AI builds depends entirely on how you describe it. A good prompt turns into a polished app. A vague one turns into something generic.

Here's how to write prompts that actually work.

Be Specific About Structure

Don't just say what the app is. Say what sections, pages, or features it has.

Weak: "build me a to-do app"

Strong: "a to-do app with categories, drag-to-reorder, due dates, a progress bar showing completion percentage, and dark mode"

The second prompt gives the AI a blueprint. The first gives it nothing to work with.

Describe the User Flow

Think about what a person does when they use your app, then describe that journey:

"When the user opens the app, they see their task list grouped by category. They can click the + button to add a new task with a title, category, and optional due date. Completed tasks move to a 'done' section at the bottom."

This is more useful than listing features because it describes behavior.

Reference Visual Style

AI can interpret style direction surprisingly well:

  • "Minimal and clean, like the Linear app"
  • "Warm and friendly, with rounded corners and soft shadows"
  • "Dark theme with neon accents, like a cyberpunk dashboard"
  • "Professional and corporate, suitable for a B2B product"

If you don't specify a style, the result will be generic. Take five seconds to set direction.

Specify the Audience

Context changes output significantly:

  • "A portfolio for a senior software engineer interviewing at FAANG companies"
  • "A landing page targeting non-technical small business owners"
  • "A game for kids aged 8-12"

The AI adjusts language, complexity, and design decisions based on who it's building for.

Use Iteration, Not Perfection

Don't try to write the perfect prompt on the first try. Start with the core idea, generate, then refine:

  1. "A recipe organizer with categories and search"
  2. "Add a shopping list feature that aggregates ingredients from selected recipes"
  3. "Make the design warmer — cream background, serif headings, food photography placeholders"

Three quick iterations beat one huge prompt every time.

Mention What You Don't Want

Constraints are as useful as requirements:

  • "No gradients or generic stock photo placeholders"
  • "Keep it simple — no animations, no parallax scrolling"
  • "Don't use a hamburger menu — keep navigation visible"

This prevents the AI from falling into default patterns.

Include Real Content

If you have actual copy, include it. "Use the heading 'Ship faster, build better' and the subheading 'AI-powered development for teams that move fast'" is dramatically better than letting AI generate placeholder text.

The One-Sentence Test

If you can't describe what you're building in one sentence, the prompt won't work well either. Start with clarity, add detail after.

Good starting point: "A habit tracker that shows a yearly heatmap of completed habits."

Then add specifics from there.
